Covid-19 cases near 11,000 in Bangladesh

Highest 786 cases recorded in 24 hours, death toll up by 1 to 183

Confirmed coronavirus infection cases have stand near 11,000-mark in Bangladesh as the country recorded the highest single-day cases with 786 more people testing positive in the last 24 hours.

With the latest figure, the number of total confirmed cases jumped to 10,929.

Meanwhile, the country witnessed a fall in death figures as only one individual has died of Covid-19 over the same period, taking the number of fatalities to 183 in the country.

Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Additional Director General (Administration) Prof Nasima Sultana revealed the latest figures through a daily online bulletin on Covid-19 situation from Dhaka on Tuesday afternoon.

She said as many as 6,182 samples have been collected in the past 24 hours and of those, 5,711 have been tested in 33 laboratories across the country.

The DGHS official said the lone deceased was a man aged between 21 and 30. 

In the briefing, Prof Nasima also revealed that 193 more Covid-19 patients have recovered from the infection in the past 24 hours.

As per the revised guidelines provided by the newly formed Clinical Management Committee of the health authorities, so far 1,403 people have won the fight against coronavirus.

Nasima said: "128 people were put under institutional isolation in the last 24 hours, bringing the total to 1,694 while 1,243 individuals were released from the isolation so far.

"Meanwhile, 2,477 people have been put in home and institutional quarantine in the past 24 hours. Till now 197,811 people have been quarantined across the country, of which 156,689 have been released.”

The DGHS official also said that the authorities concerned are continuing their screening efforts at the country’s land ports, seaports, and airports to detect coronavirus patients.

"In the last 24 hours, we have screened 547 passengers coming into Bangladesh through the various entry points of the country.  So far we have screened 679,400 travellers for coronavirus.”

Nasima also told the press that, so far 1,930,254 personal protective equipment (PPE) have been collected and at least 1,549,482 have been distributed across the country.

"We have 380,772 PPE in stock now." 

On March 8, the health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first case of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new strain of coronavirus named Sars-CoV-2 that broke out in China's Wuhan in December last year and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.

The fast spreading coronavirus has claimed 252,758 lives and infected 3,663,815 people across the world till 5:10pm on Tuesday, according to worldometer.

As many as 1,205,904 people have recovered from Covid-19, a disease caused by a new strain of coronavirus, which has spread to 212 countries and territories across the planet.
