Coronavirus: Mirpur building put on lockdown as couple found positive

Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research has sent the couple to Kuwait Bangladesh Friendship Government Hospital

Police have placed a five-storey building in Dhaka's Mirpur 1 area on lockdown as two of its residents -- a man and his wife -- have tested positive for coronavirus infection.

Mirpur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mostajirur Rahman confirmed the matter on Sunday.

The couple was staying in the second floor of the building located in Shah Ali Bagh area.

He said: "The couple was suffering from Covid-19 symptoms. As they tested positive with the infection, the IEDCR [Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research] sent them to Kuwait Bangladesh Friendship Government Hospital around 12pm.

"The IEDCR is looking into the cause of their infection," he said.

Meanwhile, police have been deployed and, through loudspeaker announcement, the residents in the area have been asked to stay alert, the OC added.

As of Sunday, Bangladesh has so far recorded nine deaths and 88 cases from Covid-19, a pandemic announced by the World Health Organization (WHO).

The fast spreading coronavirus, which was first reported in China's Wuhan, has claimed 64,975 lives and infected 1,205,802 people across the world till 3:40pm on Sunday, according to worldometer.

As many as 247,961 people have recovered from Covid-19, a disease caused by a new strain of coronavirus, which has spread to 206 countries and territories across the planet.
