Quader: If required, will lockdown some areas

If needed government will also suspend all public transport

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has said if required, the government will lockdown some areas to prevent the spread of coronavirus, which has killed over 7,800 across the world.

He made the statement at a press briefing at his secretariat office on Wednesday.

Quader, also the Awami League general secretary, said: “If required, we will lockdown some areas following recommendations (from Ministry of Health).

“We will get stricter against those who violate home quarantine guidelines. People should follow the instructions to prevent the spread of the virus,” he said.

He added: “We are requesting all political parties to join the government in the fight against coronavirus.”

The minister said: “Use of public transport will be gradually decreased if the coronavirus situation gets worse. If it is required, we will suspend all public transport.”

As of now, at least 11 Covid-19 patients have been confirmed in Bangladesh. 

The government on March 14, had prohibited all incoming flights from Europe, except the United Kingdom, till March 31. 

Simultaneously, the government declared that all educational institutions under the Ministry of Education across Bangladesh will be shut from March 18 till 31, in an effort to stem the spread of coronavirus in the country.

Besides, all cinema halls around Bangladesh are going into lockdown mode from March 18 to April 2.
