The speech also touched the soul of every Bangladeshi citizen and guided everyone to build a unique nation

Bangabandhu's speech of March 7 alluded to the practice of democracy and progressive thinking, and inspired the whole nation to take part in the Liberation War of Bangladesh in order to free the country from enemy forces.

The speech also touched the soul of every Bangladeshi citizen and guided everyone to build a unique nation.

These observations were made by speakers at a seminar called ‘Bangabandhu 7th March Speech and Independence Dialogue,’ organized by the National Press Club yesterday.

Writer and researcher Harun Habib presented the keynote speech while National Press Club President Saiful Alam presided over the program.

Eminent writer and columnist Syed Abul Maqsood said the historic speech given by the Father of the Nation was a commitment to create a non-sectarian, democratic, and progressive state.

"The speech was played across the country when the Awami League was not in power and it will be talked about even after centuries. Nobody can stop the spirit of the speech," he added.

He further said that Bangabandhu was not a separatist, but a democratic leader which is why the rest of the world supported him.

Maqsood also talked of the inequality perpetuated by the Pakistani regime for 23 years.

Ziaur Rahman was inspired by the March 7 speech, said journalist leader Monjurul Ahsan Bulbul, adding that in an article written by Ziaur Rahman, it is mentioned that there were hints of the announcement of independence in the speech.

In this regard there needs to be further research, and documents related to this historic speech should be studied, he added.

Journalist Sohrab Hasan said the essence of the speech was the practice of democracy and it was a symbolic protest against the discrimination by what was then West Pakistan.

"But what is the reality today? We are moving away from the practice of democracy," he added.

On February 5, The High Court observed that Bangabandhu’s historic March 7 speech should be included in textbooks so that young people can learn about its significance.

On February 25, The High Court ordered the government to declare March 7 a ‘Historic National Day’ and publish a gazette notification to this effect within a month.

Prof Anwar Hossain at the program said the demand for the announcement of National Day on March 7 was justified.

Among others, journalist Abu Said Khan, Ajay Das Gupta, Bhorer Kagoj Editor Shyammal Dutt, National Press Club General Secretary Farida Yasin, Senior Vice President Omar Faruque, and Vice President Azizul Islam were present at the seminar.
