Bangabandhu Chair Professor at the University of Dhaka and former governor of Bangladesh Bank, Dr Atiur Rahman, has been made Special Adviser to Social Innovation Japan (SIJ), led by Professor Emeritus Sei Yonekura of Hitotsubashi University, Tokyo.
SIJ is building Japan's largest and most diverse platform of changemakers, providing a platform for mission driven individuals from diverse backgrounds and organisations, to connect and collaborate.
This was announced on February 4, 2020, at a special event on financial inclusion and SDGs in Tokyo.
Moderated by Professor Yonekura, the keynote address was delivered by Dr. Atiur Rahman. In his presentation, Dr. Atiur said the core message of Bangladesh's development story of financial inclusion was about change in the mindset of bankers, motivated by the central bank to learn by doing.
He emphasized linking finance with a sustainability agenda by ingraining a socially and environmentally responsible financial ethos, reflecting upon challenges.
He said Bangladesh Bank followed this path by enabling the bottom of the social pyramid through financing sustainable entrepreneurial innovations.
Apart from creating an enabling environment for the microfinance sector to grow through prudent regulations, the central bank of Bangladesh bolstered growth by fostering innovations in agri finance, promoting SMEs and women entrepreneurship, expanding green finance, and above all, digitizing financial services in Bangladesh.
