District administration, police and tourist police to coordinate efforts to ensure maximum security for tourists

Law enforcement officials in Cox’s Bazar say they are taking a hard line in the matter of security for tourists, since at least two men attempted to rape an Australian woman at Pechardwip in Ramu upazila, Cox’s Bazar earlier this month.

Mathan Chandra Sutra Dhar, executive magistrate of the district administration’s tourist cell, said: “The district administration, district police, and tourist police have been maintaining a coordinated effort to ensure maximum security for our tourists. A number of magistrates are on duty at the beach and nearby tourist centres.”

Superintendent Md Zillur Rahman of Cox’s Bazar tourist police said: “We have taken swift action after the attempt to rape the Australian tourist. The criminals are now in jail while an investigation is ongoing. Police in uniform or in plain clothes are vigilant 24/7.”

Additional Superintendent of Police Md Ikbal Hossain said: “Every year during this peak season for holidaymakers, we receive a large number of visitors. It’s challenging to bring down one or two incidents of crime to zero, especially in the remote areas of the beach. We have strengthened our efforts to deal with such crimes and are taking a hard line to ensure the security of tourists.”

Tourists are crowding renowned tourist spots in Cox’s Bazar this time of the year. Law enforcement offcials say they are active in conducting mobile courts at various spots including hotels, motels, and restaurants. They have been fining and jailing people involved in fraudulent activities in these areas.

Tourists can submit any crime related complaints to the district administration by contacting them on their hotline number, 01733373127, launched this year.

Eleven information booths are also in place at several points, including Laboni, Sugandha and Kolatali, where any kind of complaint can be submitted.

On the night of December 15, two men identified as Ansar Ullah, 24, and Abdul Gafur, 20, attempted to rape an Australian woman at the Good Vibe Cottage, a desolate resort in Pechardwip.

Police filed a case and arrested the two primary accused, who have confessed to attempting the rape during preliminary interrogation.
