Four ABT members held
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested four active members of banned militant outfit Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), who were planning to launch attacks on law enforcement agencies, especially the police.
The group was arrested in the Rainkhola area, under the jurisdiction of Shah Ali police station, in Dhaka, on Wednesday night, at around 10:50pm.
The arrested are -- Ariful Karim Chowdhury alias Adnan Chowdhury, Mehedi Hasan Shakil alias Babu, Abdul Al Mamun and Nazmul Hasan.
Confirming the matter, RAB-4 Commanding Officer (CO) Mozammel Haque said: "We learnt about attacks being planned, targeting the police, following forensic tests of mobile phones of those arrested. However, there were no mentions of when they were planning to conduct them."
"Acting on a tip-off, we conducted a raid and arrested them. We recovered extremist books, leaflets, electronic circuits, devices, batteries and mobile phones from their possession," he added at a press briefing yesterday
He also said that the individuals were interacting with each other through Facebook Messenger and other online platforms. 23 members of the group have been arrested in the last three months. Efforts are underway to arrest members of the group who remain at large.
Furthermore, Mozammel Haque said: "Ariful was an Ameer of ABT with a part of Dhaka under his control. Earlier, he was a member of Harkat-ul-Jihad-al-Islami (HuJI). He was arrested under the Anti-Terrorism Act in 2015 and spent 11 months in jail. Ariful joined ABT after being released from prison. Ariful kept in touch with top militants through online platforms."
"Mehedi studied in paramedical courses and Al Mamun is a second year student of Alim who joined ABT two years ago. Nazmul worked at a real-estate developing company. He conducts militant activities using various pseudonyms online," he added.
"In addition to these four, there are several others who are associated with the group," said Additional DIG Mozammel Haque while adding that efforts were underway to arrest them.
