1,577 medical teams ready to tackle 'Bulbul'

Adequate stock of medicines and medical equipment has already been ensured in those districts

As many as 1,577 medical teams have been formed in coastal districts to provide emergency medical services as the very severe cyclonic storm Bulbul continues to approach Bangladeshi coasts.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) gave the information via a press release on Saturday. 

The teams are comprised of medical officers/assistant surgeons, senior staff nurse, midwives, deputy assistant community medical officers, health assistants, community health care providers, and others, it said.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief opened 4,516 shelter centres in the districts where the medical teams will provide necessary health services, the press statement said.

Adequate stock of medicines and medical equipment has already been ensured in those districts, it said.  

Besides, the holidays of officials and employees of the health department have also been cancelled until further notice, the press release added.

In a special weather bulletin on Saturday, the Met office issued great danger signal number 10 for maritime ports of Mongla and Payra, and great danger signal number nine for Chittagong port.

The very severe cyclonic storm Bulbul, situated over northwest bay and adjoining area, moved northwards and now lies over the same area.  

It is likely to move in a north/northeasterly direction and may cross West Bengal-Khulna coast (near Sundarbans) by Saturday evening.
