Khoka passed away while receiving treatment at a hospital in New York
Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen has said there will be full cooperation from the government in bringing back the body of veteran politician Sadeque Hossain Khoka.
“Sadeque Hossain Khoka was a freedom fighter, full cabinet minister as well as a mayor. We mourn his death and our consulate general in New York will issue travel permits for Sadeque Hossain Khoka and his wife as soon as possible,” the minister told the Dhaka Tribune on Monday evening.
“There will undoubtedly be full cooperation on the part of the government in respect of bringing the body back home. Before we do that, there are some formalities involved, which includes the issuance of the death certificate from the hospital where he was being treated,” the minister added.
Khoka, also vice chairman of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and former fisheries and livestock minister, passed away while receiving treatment at a hospital in New York in early hours of Monday.
Earlier on Sunday, State Minister for Foreign Affairs M Shahriar Alam, in a Facebook post, said the embassy in New York is ready to issue a “travel permit” if the family of former Dhaka City Corporation mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka applies for it.
Meanwhile, BNP on Sunday urged the government to take necessary steps so that the then ailing Khoka can return home from the US.
