The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has donated 50 wheelchairs to a local Cox’s Bazar school to aid children with special needs as part of their stepped-up efforts to support the Bangladeshi host community.

The distribution took place on Tuesday at the Arunodoy School, which was attended by hundreds of participants including students with disabilities, teachers, and community members.

IOM’s program manager for Transition and Recovery Patrick Charignon addressed the handover, which was financed by the Canadian government.

“Supporting persons with disabilities is a priority for IOM and we are pleased to offer this assistance as part of our increasing commitment to our friends in the Bangladeshi host community,” said Charignon.

Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner Md Kamal Hossain, and other local government officials and dignitaries were also present at the event.

Government figures state that Cox’s Bazar has 28,000 persons with disabilities and the Arunodoy School aims to help students enter the mainstream education system as much as possible.

The IOM effort is a part of stepped-up support for the Bangladeshi host community and for persons with disabilities. Arunodoy is the first institution of its kind in Cox’s Bazar and is set to open its doors to 700 students with 500 children with special needs, and 200 street children.
