3 more die of dengue

A record 50,000 people have been hospitalized with dengue so far this year, says DGHS

Three people, including an infant, have died after being diagnosed with dengue in Dhaka and Faridpur.

In Dhaka, a six-month-old baby died after suffering from dengue shock syndrome.

The child, Ayazur Rahman, died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Shishu Hospital around 1:25am Saturday. 

Confirming the matter, the hospital's physician Dr Shahin Sharif said the child had been admitted there since August 14. 

A total of 11 children, including this infant, have died of dengue at the Shishu Hospital.

Another woman died of dengue at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) around 11:45pm Friday, reports our DMCH correspondent.

The deceased Manwara Begum, 45, wife of Saiful Islam, hailed from Mithamain upazila of Kishoreganj.

Manwara’s husband said: "Manwara had been suffering from fever for 10 days, so we admitted her to a local hospital in Bhagalpur at first. Later she was transferred to DMCH on Tuesday. 

"As her condition deteriorated, she was shifted to the intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital where doctor pronounced her dead on Friday morning."

Confirming the matter, Inspector in-charge Bacchu Mia of DMCH police outpost  said: "Manwara’s body has been released from the hospital, and her family is now taking the body back home.”

In Faridpur, a college student died of dengue while undergoing treatment at Faridpur Medical College and Hospital (FMCH) on Saturday morning, reports UNB.

The deceased was identified as Sumon Bashar Raj, 18, son of Mizanur Rahman of Changpur village in Magura district. 

He was a second year student of a government college in Magura.

Mostafizur Rahman Bulu, assistant director of FMCH, said Sumon was admitted to the hospital on August 12 and died around 10am Saturday.

Mizanur Rahman,father of the deceased, said Sumon was diagnosed with dengue at Magura Hospital on August 8 and was later  admitted to FMCH.

Sources from the Faridpur Civil Surgeon office said that in the last 24 hours from Saturday morning, at least 73 new dengue patients have been admitted to different hospitals in the district, while 396 are undergoing treatment.

Record number of dengue patients this year  

A record 50,000 people have been hospitalized with dengue this year, according to data provided by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). 

The DGHS Health Emergency Operations Centre and Control Room said around 1,719 dengue patients had been admitted to different hospitals across the country in the  last 24 hours till 8am yesterday, taking the total number of patients to be hospitalized with dengue to 49,999.

The DGHS also said 84% of the patients (42,243 people) have already been released from their respective hospitals and clinics after being treated.

Although the official dengue death toll from the DGHS stands at 40 this year, the unofficial count from media reports is over 98.
