Dengue menace: 3 including govt official's pregnant wife die

The deceased woman was seven months pregnant 

Three people -- including a pregnant woman have died of dengue virus at different hospitals across the country on Monday.

In Dhaka, Sharmin Ara Shapla, wife of Met Office Deputy Director AKM Nazmul Haque died while undergoing treatment at the Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital on Monday morning.

Confirming the matter, Met Office Assistant Director Taslima Imam said: "Nazmul's wife was seven months pregnant. Nazmul is currently in South Korea attending atraining.”

Another male patient, Hasan, 14, died of dengue at the Dhaka Medical Hospital College (DMCH) at around 10:30pm on Sunday, confirmed Dr Md Nasiruddin, assistant director (administration) of the hospital on Monday.

Hasan was admitted at the DMCH on Saturday.

"According to our latest count,a total of 13 people have died of dengue at the DMCH. We are currently treating 183 dengue patients here," he said.     

In Khulna, Khadija, 40, a resident of Bagerhat died of dengue fever at the district's Khulna City Medical College Hospital around 7am on Monday.  

Khulna Civil Surgeon Dr ASM Abdur Razzak confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.  

Earlier on Sunday, five people (except Hasan) -- including the wife of Additional Inspector General of Police (Finance) Shahabuddin Qureshi and an Eden college student -- died of dengue across the country.

Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on the same day issued a press release signed by Dr Ayesha Akter, assistant director of Health Emergency Operations Centre and Control Room addressing the current dengue situation of the country.

In the last 24 hours a total of 2,065 patients have been admitted in different hospitals countrywide due to dengue fever, said the release.

With the current findings, at present the number of admitted patients undergoing treatment in government and private hospitals combined is 7658, according to the latest data provided by Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Monday.

According to DGHS's own data, total 18 dengue patients have died so far across the country.

In Dhaka's 38 government and private hospitals, total 4,962 patients are currently receiving treatment whereas total of 2,696 people are undergoing treatment outside Dhaka.

Since January 1 till August 5 this year, a total of 27,437 people have been affected by dengue.

Among the admitted, total 19,761 have been released from their respective hospitals and clinics after treatment.

Dengue cases still surging

At least three people, including a pregnant woman, died of dengue as the tally of patients suffering from the mosquito-borne virus kept spiraling with 1,687 new cases across the country on Friday. Two of the victims died in Dhaka.

Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) data showed that 24,804 people were hospitalized with dengue since January 1. Of them, 18,842 patients were admitted to hospitals since July 2.

Currently, 7,398 patients, including children, are undergoing treatment at hospitals till Sunday.

Although government data shows 18 people were killed of dengue, unofficial tally claims at least 47 people have died due to the mosquito-borne virus.
