President, PM mourn Ershad’s death

Ershad died on Sunday morning

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Hussain Muhammad Ershad, leader of the opposition in parliament and Jatiya Party (JaPa) chairman.

HM Ershad passed away at the Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka around 7:45am.

In a condolence message released on Sunday morning, the prime minister recalled Ershad's constructive role in parliament as the opposition leader, reports UNB.

In separate messages, the president and the premier prayed for salvation of his departed soul and expressed deep sympathy to Ershad's bereaved family members.

Meanwhile the foreign minister, speaker, deputy speaker and chief whip, along with Law Minister Anisul Haque and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Mohammad Atiqul Islam, have also mourned the death of Ershad.

Ershad was admitted to CMH on June 22 as his condition deteriorated.

He had been suffering from various old-age complications, including low haemoglobin and liver problems, high bilirubin and serious knee pain.
