Industries minister to media: Use 'substandard' instead of 'adulterated'

The term 'adulterated' negatively affects country products

Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun has urged the print and electronic media to use 'substandard' instead of the widely used term 'adulterated' when describing Bangladeshi goods in the event of any incongruity.

"The term 'adulterated' negatively affects the myriad export items of the country which are already in the global markets, he said.

Foreign companies and buyers take advantage of this situation," the minister said this at a daylong event styled Bangladesh Marketing Day at the TSC auditorium of Dhaka University on Friday, reports UNB.

At the program organized by the Bangladesh Marketers' Institute (BMI), the minister reiterates that reports on food adulteration during Eid holidays badly affect businesses and consumer behavior. 

"Adulteration is a bad word. Think twice before using the term," he said, adding: "A product can be substandard but that doesn't mean it's adulterated."

Humayun urged the Bangladesh Standards and Testing Institution (BSTI) and Institute of Nutrition and Food Science of Dhaka University not to make any public announcements without coming to an evidence-based conclusion from the laboratories or authorities concerned. 

He asked everyone to be aware of people who spread propaganda against Bangladeshi products.

Jagannath University Vice-Chancellor Prof Mizanur Rahman said 'Bangladesh Marketing Day' celebration will strengthen the relationship between students and practitioners in the field of marketing.

Shariful Islam Dulu, BMI organizing committee member secretary, said about 4.5 million people are involved in the marketing sector and contributing to the national economy.

Asif Iqbal, Deputy Managing Director (Fast Moving Consumer Goods - FMCG) at Meghna Group of Industries, said, "We have to think of global marketing in the era of a fourth industrial revolution and generate smart, sustainable, and innovative marketing ideas."
