PM asks civil servants to pay greater attention to duties

June 23 is celebrated as United Nations Public Service Day every year globally

Update : 23 Jun 2019, 01:35 PM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has asked Bangladesh Civil Service's (BCS) law and administration cadre officials to pay greater attention to their duties always so that militancy, terrorism, corruption, and drug can't destroy the society.

“Don’t take your service merely as a job, work for the country as well as the people with dutifulness and patriotism,” she said.

Sheikh Hasina, who is also the Public Administration Minister, made the remarks while addressing the closing ceremony of the 110th, 111th, and 112th Law and Administration Courses at Bangladesh Civil Service Administration Academy in Dhaka's Shahbag yesterday.

The premier simultaneously asked them to be innovative, confident and equip them with time-befitting knowledge to reach the outcome of the development to people’s doorsteps.

She said: “If someone loves the country and works with sincerity, he/she can take the country forward. I hope you [BCS cadres] will do your work with affection, authenticity, patriotism, dutifulness, and innovative ideas."

The premier said: "Remember… this is not only your job. If you nurture the feelings of responsibility, patriotism, and affection for the country and its people, and have accountability in your mind, the country will surely prosper.

"You should work for your country and its people to make Bangladesh a developed country. I believe you will do your duties properly,” the premier continued.

"I will not see 2041, but you [BCS cadres] will be the main workforces to fulfill my dream to make Bangladesh a developed country within 2041," she said.

Not only the capital Dhaka, but villages will also be brought under development projects, she continued.

June 23 is globally celebrated as the United Nations Public Service Day every year.

"The world observes June 23 as Public Service Day, but the day has a different significance to us, as Awami League was formed on this day in 1949."

Bangladesh Awami League is behind each and every success, and progress of the country, said Sheikh Hasina, the president of the party.

Bangladesh Awami League was founded to establish the rights of people, she said adding: “That’s why the fate of the people is changed (improved) when AL comes to power.”

'Cope with technology'

She urged the public servants to cope with the constantly changing technology and environment at workplaces. “The present world is changing constantly with the invention of new technologies. Many changes also occur at workplaces. You've got to catch up with it,” she said.

About the Annual Development Programme (ADP) for the 2019-20 fiscal year, the prime minister said; "Now the government has undertaken development projects involving Tk2.02 lakh crore which was merely Tk19,000 in the past."

'Poverty rate is to be brought down to a level less than US'

Sheikh Hasina claimed that her government has targeted to bring down the country’s poverty rate to a level lower than what the USA has.

“At present, we’ve brought down the poverty rate to 21.8%. I’ve a target to reduce it further. The poverty rate in the USA may be 17% to 18%. I’ll have to cut it down to at least one percent less than that of the USA, at any cost,” she said.

State minister for Public Administration Ministry, Farhad Hossain, chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Public Administration Ministry HN Ashequr Rahman, Public Administration Secretary Faiz Ahmed, and rector of the Bangladesh Civil Service Administration Academy Kazi Rowshan Akhter, also spoke at the programme.

Earlier, the prime minister distributed certificates among the course participants.
