Some of Bangladesh’s most memorable World Cup moments have come against England. Let’s have a brief look at our previous World Cup encounters against England.
2007: Super Eight Stage
After beating India in the group stage in one of the most famous wins in Bangladesh cricket, the Tigers qualified for the Super Eight where they would face England for the first time in the World Cup. The Tigers had another historic victory against South Africa in the Super Eight. Despite the tournament being the most successful World Cup Bangladesh had played thus far, the encounter against England was hardly memorable. Bangladesh batted first and got bowled out for 143 runs. The bowlers put up an impressive fight, but in the end England won comfortably by four wickets with five overs in hand.
2011: Group Stage
The hope was high in 2011 when Bangladesh co-hosted the World Cup for the first time. The Tigers faced England in their fourth match of the tournament. The team’s confidence, however, took a beating as Bangladesh got all-out for just 58 against the West Indies in the previous match. Bangladesh came back in spectacular fashion to beat England by two wickets. England batted first on a turning wicket in Chittagong’s Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium and stuttered their way to reasonable total of 225. In response, Bangladesh kept losing wickets in regular intervals until Mahmudullah and Shafiul Islam stitched together a match-winning ninth-wicket partnership. The latter was declared man-of-the-match for his run-a-ball 24, including four boundaries and one six.

2015: Group Stage
Bangladash faced England in their fifth game of the 2015 World Cup. It was a must-win match for both the teams. The Tigers defeated England in what can be considered the greatest victory in Bangladesh’s sporting history. Batting first, the Tigers lost both the openers within three overs. Mahmudullah then fought back firstly with Soumya Sarkar, and then Mushfiquer Rahim, to rebuild the innings and scored Bangladesh’s maiden World Cup century. The Tigers eventually reached a fighting total of 275. The English batsmen batted well in the middle overs to chase the total down, but somewhat lost their way in the end due to Mashrafe bin Mortaza’s intelligent bowling changes. England needed 16 runs from the last two overs with two wickets in hand, but Rubel Hossain’s deadly reversing yorkers proved to be too much for the England tail. Bangladesh won the thriller and grabbed a place in the World Cup quarter-final for the first time in their history.
