Police have arrested a man from south Mugda area of Dhaka for allegedly strangling his wife to death and setting her body on fire.

The victim, Hashi Begum, 35, was living with her husband, Komol Hossain, at a rented flat in Bank Colony in the area since their marriage eight months ago, said Pronoy Kumar Saha, officer-in-charge (OC) of Mugda police station, on Wednesday.

After being informed by neighbours, police recovered the burnt corpse in the morning, he said.

After primary interrogation, Komol, a workshop owner, admitted to murdering his wife, said Saha.

The OC also said it was a second marriage for both. In recent times, the couple used to quarrel over Hashi talking to her ex-husband, which Komol could not accept.

On Tuesday night, Komol strangled his wife during an altercation and later, set the body on fire after pouring kerosene on it, the officer added.
