The Prime Minster unveiled three development schemes at Kanchpur and Rupganj in Narayanganj and Kaliakair in Gazipur

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said the government will build overpasses near four-way intersections to ease communication, mitigate traffic congestions and minimize road accidents.

“From now on, we will build overpasses at the places of four-way intersections for making communications smooth and easier alongside stopping traffic gridlocks,” said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina while inaugurating three development schemes through video conference from Ganabhaban on Saturday.

She inaugurated four-lane ‘Second Kanchpur Bridge’ on the river Shitalakkhya, four-lane flyover at Bhulta and a railway overpass at Latifpur on Dhaka-Sylhet Highway.

The Prime Minster renamed the ‘Second Kanchpur Bridge’ as ‘Shitalakkhya Bridge’ with an aim to save the River’s name.

The 397.3-metre long and 18.1-metre wide four-lane bridge has been constructed at cost of Taka 950crore while the three-lane 329.01-metre Latifpur Railway Overpass has been constructed at Kalakair in Gazipur district and four-lane Bhulta Flyover has been constructed at a cost of Taka 353.36crore at Bhulta under Rupganj Upazila in Narayanganj.

Checking road accidents

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina asked the authorities concerned to take steps so that drivers cannot engage in 'evil race' on highways and roads as those often cause fatal accidents.

"You (authorities concerned) have to look into evil races by drivers on highways and roads and check those," she said.

She asked the authorities to provide training to drivers and helpers, allow them to rest and stop them from engaging in evil race on roads to avoid fatal accidents.

Sheikh Hasina told the authorities concerned to be strict on allowing overweight trucks while plying bridges. "There should be weighing machine at every bridge point...the weight management should strictly be maintained.... otherwise the bridges will lose their durability," she said. Overweight trucks should use ferries instead of bridge, she added.

Projects to develop communication

Unveiling the three development schemes at Kanchpur and Rupganj in Narayanganj and Kaliakair in Gazipur, the premier said, the projects will help ease communication between Dhaka and Chattogram, Dhaka and Sylhet and country’s Northeastern region.

The schemes will also help accelerate the pace of industrialization, trade and commerce and thus increase the standard of lives of people alongside decreasing traffic gridlocks saving time, she added.

Government’s initiatives

The Prime Minister briefly described the various development activities of her government in developing the communications system of the country She said the government is very much sincere about the balanced development across the country.
