Demonstrations and human chain programs held in Karfa Bazar area and Isladi bus stand demanding speedy trial and execution of killers involved in the murder of Jalla union parishad (UP) Chairman Bishwajit Haldar Nantu of Ujirpur upazila, Barisal.
On Thursday, around 11am in a few kilometer radius of Karfa Bazar area of Jalla union under Ujirpur upazila, family members, political leaders, and locals, shouted slogans and cried for punishment and justice.
Ujirpur UP chairman Iqbal Hafizur Rahman, central Awami League leader Habibur Rahman Khan, and former president of Jalla union Awami League, Samir Kumar Majumder, spoke on the occasion.
The Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Unity Council and Puja Udjapan Parishad organized human chain programs at the Isladi bus stand on the Barisal-Dhaka highway in Ujirpur upazila, demanding the trial of Nantu’s killers.
The administration deployed police heavily to maintain law and order in the area.
On Friday night around 8:30pm, unidentified masked gunmen murdered Bishwajit Haldar Nantu, 40, chairman of Jalla union council and president of Jalla union Awami League unit of Wazirpur in Barisal, after entering his business enterprise.
Later, Nantu’s father Shuklal Haldar filed a murder case against a local MP and general secretary of the Barisal district Awami League, Advocate Talukder, Abu Sayeed, personal secretary to Md Yunus, and 32 others, along with 7 other unidentified accused.
The police arrested 7 people suspected of involvement in the case and a Barisal court sent them to jail.
The arrested are Taimul Islam, Panna, Siraj Sikder, Ayub Ali, Harishat Roy, and a former UP member.
