After visiting BNP chief Khaleda Zia at the Old Dhaka Central Jail, doctors have said she is in stable physical condition, and not in any danger.

However, after Saturday’s visit, they suggested that she be treated at a hospital run by specialized doctors for better treatment.

“If she wants to come to our hospital, then we are fully-prepared to receive and treat her,” said Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Director Brig Gen Abdullah Al Harun.

BSMMU Internal Medicine Department Head Dr Abdul Jalil Chowdhury heads the medical board.

Other members of the board are: Cardiology Department Prof Harisul Haque, Orthopaedic Surgery Department Chairman Professor Abu Zafar Chowdhury Biru, Ophthalmology Department Associate Prof Tariq Reza Ali, and Physical Medicine Department Associate Prof Badrunnessa Ahmed.

“The team informed us that although Khaleda is ill, she has not developed a new illness since her jailing,” said the BSMMU director.

Later in the day, BNP Standing Committee member Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain, at a press briefing in the party's Naya Paltan office, urged the government to ensure Khaleda receive proper treatment— by forming a medical board comprised of doctors of her choice.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia was sentenced to five years in prison on February 8 in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case.

On September 9, a 10-member BNP delegation led by its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir met Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and requested that Khaleda be taken to United Hospital—as well as that her personal physicians be included in the medical team.
