The Primary and Mass Education Minister announced this on International Literacy Day
The current literacy rate in Bangladesh is 72.9%, says Primary and Mass Education Minister Mostafizur Rahman.
“The literacy rate now stands at 72.9%, thanks to the relentless efforts of the government,” he said at a press conference marking International Literacy Day at the Secretariat on Thursday.
The minister said there are 32.5 million illiterate people while the number of school dropouts ranging from 8-14 years is one million.
They will be provided education through non-formal learning, he said.
Mostafizur said nearly 18 million people had achieved literacy between 1996 and 2001.
The minister said the Bureau of Non-Formal Education has implemented a countrywide project to provide education to 4.5 million people aged 15-45 years.
The government will arrange employment training programs for these five million newly- literate people so that they can become skilled manpower, he further said.
