PM: Dhaka-Delhi relationship better than ever

The prime minister said the people of Bangladesh always express their gratitude towards the Indian government and people for their all-out support during the 1971 Liberation War

Update : 14 Aug 2018, 03:02 AM

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday said the relation between Bangladesh and India now reached a newer height as both the countries duly value each other.

She said this when West Bengal State Executive Member and Adviser to Bharatiya Janata Party President Dr Anindya Gopal Mitra called on her at her office in Dhaka, reports UNB.

Briefing reporters after the meeting, the prime minister’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim said Mitra also echoed Hasina’s observation on the Indo-Bangla relationship.

The prime minister said the people of Bangladesh always express their gratitude towards the Indian government and people for their all-out support during the 1971 Liberation War.

She said one generation was completely kept in the dark about the country’s history as the real history was distorted after the assassination of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15, 1975.

But, she said, the country’s new generation was now aware of the real history and learned it.

Anindya Gopal Mitra told the prime minister that he was a young politician during the 1971 war, and apprised her about the role he played during that time.

PM to visit Tungipara on August 15

The prime minister is set to visit Tungipara in Gopalganj to observe the 43rd death anniversary of Bangabandhu, and National Mourning Day, on August 15.

She will pay her respects by placing wreaths on Bangabandhu’s mausoleum at 10am, according to a fax, signed by the prime minister’s Assistant Personal Secretary-1 Kazi Nishat Rosul, sent to the Gopalganj deputy commissioner.

According to the fax, a smartly turned-out contingent of the army will also present the prime minister with a guard of honour, reports the Dhaka Tribune’s Gopalganj Correspondent Manoj Kumar Saha.

The prime minister will attend a milad and dua mahfil in the Bangbandhu Mausoleum Mosque at 11am.

Cabinet members, members of parliament, senior leaders of Awami League and affiliated organizations, top military and civilian officials, among others, will accompany the prime minister.

Meanwhile, different preparations have been made to observe the National Mourning Day.

The mausoleum has been cleaned, the streets decorated with black archways, and black flags hoisted in many areas of Gopalganj.

Rapid Action Battalion, police and other security forces together have also beefed up security in the district.
