They have been working at the brickfields in India for the past four to five years
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) 22nd battalion’s Pathordubi BOP, detained 19 Bangladeshi men, women and children from Pathordubi border in Kurigram’s Bhurungamari upazila while illegally returning to the country from India, around 5:30am on Friday.
Eleven of them were men, six women and two children, according to the battalion’s Director Lt Col Chowdhury Saif Uddin Kaosar.
BGB officials said the detainees from Phulbari and Nageshwari upazilas had been working at the brickfields in India for the past four to five years.
They decided to return to Bangladesh as they would be excluded from the ongoing National Register of Citizens (NRC) in India.
But they were caught while crossing the border through an illegal channel and without valid documents.
Lt Col Saif said legal measures would be taken against them.
He also said that they had found out the involvement of two local brokers who were bringing these people back to Bangladesh from India without any documents for 5,000 rupees each.
The two are Abul Hossain, 38, and Jalil, 45. One Indian broker on the other side of the border was also involved with them.
The BGB official said they were conducting raids to catch the local brokers.
