The July report shows a disturbing rise in instances of child rape
More than 400 cases of rape, and 118 incidents of sexual harassment, were reported between January and July this year, rights group Odhikar says in a report.
The Human Rights Monitoring Report on Bangladesh for July, published on Wednesday, showed a steady rise in violence against women in the country.
Last month, 52 females were victims of rape, according to Odhikar documentation.
Of the victims, 16 were women and 36 were girls below the age of 18. Ten of the women were victims of gang rape. One was killed after the rape. Of the girls, six were gang-raped and two were killed after being raped.
In July, 11 women and children were victims of sexual violence. One of them later killed herself.
Odhikar also documented 10 incidents of dowry-related violence last month. Of the women, six were killed and, allegedly, four were physically abused.
The rights group said it collected the information from grassroots human rights activists associated with the organization and from national dailies.
