A civil aviation employee, and two passengers who arrived by an Emirates Airlines Flight EK582, today, have been detained while attempting to smuggle gold into the country.
The incident occurred around 9am on Sunday, confirmed Dhaka airport Customs House (preventive) Deputy Commissioner Othello Chowdhury.
According to him, a team from the Customs House went to the 2nd floor lounge of Shahjalal International Airport. A short while later, they arrested the trio – civil aviation employee Md Jamal Uddin Patwari, and the passengers Md Ekramul Haque and Zahidul Haque Salman Bhuiya – from the mosque—which is adjacent to Mutual Trust Bank’s Air Lounge, while the passengers were delivering the gold.
The passengers had been pretending to pray in the mosque, while preparing to deliver the gold. Then, Jamal Uddin entered the room. Working as the cleaning shift in-charge, he was supposed to be in possession of a D-pass. However, he had two D-passes on him at the time of his detention.
Later, the three were brought to the Customs House, where their belongings were searched in front of officials of various law-enforcement agencies. The haul included 57 gold bars which were concealed in cigarette packs wrapped in yellow tape, said Othello.
The bars weighed in at 6.63kg, and are worth roughly Tk3.32 crore on the current market.
