Lawmaker of Khulna 4 constituency – and District Awami League General Secretary – SM Mostafa Rashidi Suja, has passed away while undergoing treatment in Singapore.
He breathed his last breath around 11pm on Thursday at Mount Elizabeth Hospital. Suja is survived by his wife, son, daughter, grandchildren, and many supporters.
Suja’s brother, SM Mortoza Rashid, confirmed the matter to the Dhaka Tribune, saying: “My brother underwent a kidney transplant at the Mount Elizabeth Hospital around eight months ago.
“Suja visited Singapore again on July 18 for treatment. His wife was with him when he passed away.”
SM Mostafa Rashidi Suja was born in the Fakirhat area of Bagerhat district on March 2, 1953. He began his political career around 1968-69 as an activist of Chhatra Union, the then the students’ wing of National Awami Party led by Mawlana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani.
Suja got involved with the Jubo League in 1972 and was elected the commissioner of Liakat Nagar Union under the Khulna municipality in 1979.
He was elected a lawmaker for Khulna 4 constituency in 1986. He was nominated as a whip after winning the polls from the same constituency in 1996.
Suja has served as the general secretary of Khulna district’s Awami League three times, and was a member of the party’s central committee for one term.
He reclaimed his position as the lawmaker of Khulna 4 constituency after winning in the January 5 election in 2014.
Belonging to a family of veteran politicians, Rashidi Suja, and his brothers, made a significant contribution to the public movement of 1990.
