The commission wants to clear up all allegations of irregularities

The Election Commission (EC) has given the returning officer for the Gazipur City Corporation election seven days to verify the integrity of the election and submit a report.

Election Commissioner Mahbub Talukdar told journalists at the EC Secretariat in Dhaka’s Agargaon on Tuesday that the EC wants to look into all allegations raised about the Gazipur city election.

Answering questions on irregularities in the Gazipur city elections, Mahbub said: “Some discrepancies were highlighted by the media. The EC wants to get to the bottom of these claims to prove the integrity of the election.”

“Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda tasked me with finding irregularities in the Gazipur city election,” Mahbub added.

He also said: “The commission wants to hold fair elections for the next three cities after identifying the mistakes that were made during the Khulna and Gazipur city polls. There will be no irregularities in the next elections. We will learn from the past and march on the path forward.”

“The main goal of the EC during the upcoming parliamentary election is to ensure free and fair polls. The national election will not be held like a local election. We are working on making this happen,” the commissioner said.

“A fair election is needed to fulfil the expectations of the people,” he further said.
