Hundreds of locals held a demonstration on Tuesday at the Madhyapara area of Brahmanbaria, protesting the alleged torture of a youth named Russel Mia by police.
The human chain demonstration was held in front of Brahmanbaria Press Club around 3pm.
People from all walks of society, including Russel’s relatives, participated in the event with placards, banners, and festoons demanding exemplary punishment of those responsible for the youth’s torture.
Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune, the victim’s mother Amena Begum and brother Rubel Mia said: “Russel was working as a night guard at City Centre branch of Shahjalal Islami Bank.
“In the early hours of Monday, a theft was committed in a shop at the 3rd flood of the market, where the bank is also located. Police took away Russel for questioning on Monday afternoon.”
Claiming that Russel was tortured in police custody, his relatives alleged that the youth was thrown off the 3rd floor of a building.
Russel, who suffered critical injuries after the reported torture, is currently under treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
Russel’s uncle however told the correspondent that the youth was severely beaten by the police, and that he jumped from the roof to save himself from further beating.
Following the theft, local police high ups, including Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration) Md Iqbal Hossain, visited the crime scene. A number of suspects, including night guard Russel were taken in for questioning the same day.
The shop owner had claimed that around Tk250,000 was stolen from the cash box.
Commenting on the matter, Additional Superintendent of Police Rezaul Kabir said: “Russel was detained with a few others for questing over the theft. During iftar, he evaded the on-duty constable and went to the roof.
“We are investigating the matter to unearth what actually happened.”
