Wikipedia’s yearly photo contest has started accepting submissions of photographs from Tuesday. This year’s competition titled “Wiki Loves Earth 2018,” aims to create a permanent archive and to highlight the conservation areas of the participating countries.
Bangladesh is also participating in this year’s contest. Wikimedia Bangladesh’s general secretary and coordinator of international contests Nahid Sultan said: “We have articles on national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. But we don’t have enough pictures for those contents.
“Our purpose is to highlight the submitted pictures through Wikipedia website and to create an archive to enrich our library,” he added.
Wiki Loves Earth is coordinated by local volunteers. The national juries then submit up to 10 pictures to the international stage of the contest.
Anyone can take part in the competition. However, registration on Wikimedia Commons is required.
To enter the contest, the contestant will have to find an item or place he or she is familiar with from the competition list. Later, a picture needs to be submitted that he or she has taken, and upload it to Wikimedia Commons.
In Bangladesh, the contest is open for submission till May 31.
The contest’s co-coordinator and Bangla Wikipedia’s admin Nurunnaby Chowdhury Hasive said: “This is the second time Bangladesh is participating in such a competition. Last year one of our pictures secured the eleventh position.”
In 2017, the international jury had to consider more than 120,000 candidate pictures from 38 participating countries, according to Wiki Loves Earth’s website.
