A Biman Bangladesh Airlines crew, who was caught smuggling gold bars in Saudi Arabia, has been released by the Kingdom after giving an undertaking.
Five gold bars were found hidden in Tofael Ahmed’s shoes on April 26. Saudi officials handed him over to police.
Tofael was released after paying 25,000 riyals and giving an undertaking. He returned home Saturday.
Biman’s District Manager in Riyadh Aminul Islam said bringing gold from Saudi Arabia was not a problem but he hid it and that’s what raised suspicion.
“He was later released after giving an undertaking,” Aminul said. “We have informed the [Biman] headquarters about the incident. They can take actions against him.”
It is not the first time an employee of the national flag carrier was apprehended by the authorities.
Two cabin crews were arrested with yaba from a Riyadh hotel on February 27. Two Biman flight catering service employees were caught red-handed when smuggling 9kg gold on March 15 at the Dhaka airport.
