The jail code has provisions that allow taking BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia abroad for treatment, her lawyers’ panel member AKM Ehsanur Rahman has said.
He however added that the consent of the BNP chief, her relatives and her physicians would be needed before making such a move.
Ehsanur told the Bangla Tribune on Friday that the physicians would first check the former prime minister to determine the severity of her illness.

After examination, if the doctors believe that she needs to be taken abroad, they can do so. A decision will be needed to be made on whether the patient will go abroad herself or if her relatives would send her.
“Her relatives have the option to file an application to take her abroad for treatment as per the jail code,” the lawyer added.
A special court on February 8 jailed Khaleda for five years in a corruption case. She has been kept at the old Dhaka central jail since then.

Earlier on Friday, the party urged the government to release Khaleda from jail on health grounds. BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir told the media that they were very concerned about Khaleda’s health.
He demanded the former prime minister’s unconditional release to ensure proper treatment for her.
Reacting to the demand, Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader said that necessary measures would be taken to treat Khaleda if she fell sick.
“She will be sent abroad for better treatment if needed,” the road transport minister said. “If proper treatment can be ensured domestically, Khaleda Zia will be treated here. And if the medical board recommends her to be treated abroad, steps will be taken to ensure that too.”
