National Martyr's Memorial ready for Independence Day

The Savar National Martyrs' Memorial is all set for observation of the 48th Independence Day of Bangladesh on March 26. President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will place floral wreaths in the early hours of the day to honour the memory of the martyrs. Politicians and diplomats and other dignitaries of the country will also be present. Then the memorial will be open to the general public. The memorial grounds will be covered with flowers honouring the memory of those martyred in the 1971 Liberation War. Marking the occasion, the 9th Infantry Division of Bangladesh Army has prepared a guard of honour for the martyrs. Like every time, police has put additional measures in place for heightened security in Dhaka. “A three-layer security has been set up at the Savar Memorial and its surrounding areas; police in plain clothes have been stationed at key points, and a greater number of checkpoints and CCTV surveillance have been set up so everyone can visit the grounds safely,” said the Dhaka Superintendent of Police Shah Mizan Shafiur Rahman. The bricks from the entrance to the main memorial ground have been coloured in red and white. Flower pots have been placed along both sides of the walk way. Trees in the memorial area have been trimmed and smartly groomed. Workers of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works have been cleaning the memorial area twice a day. Every year, they start cleaning the memorial area almost a month in advance. The surrounding areas including Dhaka-Aricha highway and Nabinagar-Chandra highway are also being decorated to mark the occasion, including the dividers and walkways that have been painted in red and white. Deputy Assistant Engineer Md Mizanur Rahman, who is in charge of the decoration, said: “The memorial area has been closed to visitors from March 18, and around 100 cleaners are working every day for the past month to keep it clean and tidy.”
