The National Committee to Protect Oil Gas Mineral Resources Power and Ports will hold rallies and bring out processions in Khulna on Friday and across the countries on March 19, protesting the construction of Rampal coal-fired power plant in the vicinity of the Sundarbans.
The decision came at a meeting of the Committee in Dhaka on Tuesday.
Describing the project as detrimental to the world’s largest mangrove forest, the Committee’s member secretary Prof Anu Muhammad demanded the government scrap the project before the 11th parliamentary polls due in December this year.
“People will never accept projects that jeopardize the country’s rivers and forests.” he said.
Slating the government for going ahead with the project ignoring concerns and protests of environmentalists, the noted economist said: “This project will not only create a huge economic burden on us, but it will put the entire country in jeopardy.”
Other members of the Committee, including Ruhin Hossain Prince, Bazlur Rashid Firoze, Abul Hasan Rubel and Mizanur Rahman, were present at the meeting.
