Railway Minister Mazibul Hoque on Thursday said a total 203 people were killed and other 586 were injured in the last eight years since 2009-10.
Responding to a query by treasury bench member Didarul Alam of Chittagong 4, he told the parliament that the casualties had occurred in 1,391 accidents including derailments across the country.
The minister said 80% of these victims, however, were passengers of other mode of transports while most of these accidents took place at unauthorised level crossings around the country.
Mazibul said the accidents cost a loss of more than Tk25.5 crore in terms of damage of assets.
He said that the government was implementing a project for developing the level crossing gates and also deploying people to guard the passageways to prevent crashes.
