Dhaka Metropolitan Police has claimed that it found Kalyan Party leader AMM Aminur Rahman in the middle of the capital, nearly four months after his disappearance.
The circumstances of his reappearance are unclear as yet, but the Detective Branch said at 11:30pm Friday night, they found him getting out of a car in Shahzadpur.
DB Additional Deputy Commissioner (North) Mohammad Shahjahan told the Dhaka Tribune: “Aminur was nabbed from in front of Progoti Sarani’s Suvastu Tower around 11:30pm on Friday. We tracked his mobile phone and found his location.”
Later, DB produced him before a Dhaka court as a suspect in a sabotage case lodged with Gulshan police station on February 16, 2015 and sought a 10-day remand. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Debobrata Bishwas rejected Aminur's bail prayer and granted police four days to interrogate him.
Aminur, the secretary general of Kalyan Party, an ally of BNP, went missing on August 27.
“We have been working for a while to find Aminur Rahman. We suddenly found his mobile switched on last night. We believe he went into hiding to avoid arrest in the case,” ADC Shahjahan said.
On February 16, 2015, a bomb exploded on a procession of ruling Awami League, led by Shipping Minister Shajahan Khan, leaving eight people injured.
The procession was marching towards BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia's Gulshan office.
DB Inspector Jehad Hossain, who is in charge of the case, said they had found evidence and witnesses that Aminur was involved in the attack on the minister’s procession.
However, he was not included in the police first information report (FIR) on the bomb attack.
During a primary interrogation, Aminur told police officers he was kept in a dark room and had no idea where it was, ADC Shahjahan said.
Maj Gen (retd) Syed Muhammad Ibrahim's Kalyan Party is a member of the BNP-led 20-party Alliance.
BNP had blamed the government for his disappearance.
Aminur is the fourth person to have returned from similar abductions this year. Missing university teacher Mubashar Hasan was returned on Saturday after 44 days of captivity, and journalist Utpal das was found on December 20 after 70 days of disappearance.
