Bangladesh government has decided to purchase 30 BMW and Mercedes cars with duty-free facilities, for foreign delegates visiting Dhaka for the upcoming Organization of Islamic Co-operation (OIC) summit.
The decision was made at a meeting of Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs held at the secretariat on Wednesday. The meeting was chaired by Finance Minister AMA Muhith.
Additional Secretary of the Cabinet Division Mustafizur Rahman disclosed the matter to the reporters after the meeting.
According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Public Administration, the Mercedes Benz S Class and BMW 7 series vehicles will be purchased with duty free facilities. The decision has already been approved in principle by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Funds allocated to the Department of Government Transport will be used to procure the luxury vehicles.
The proposal to procure the vehicles, signed by Public Administration Ministry Senior Secretary Md Mozammel Haque Khan, read: “It is necessary to import 30 Mercedes Benz S Class and BMW 7 series vehicles for ensuring transportation facilities to guests attending the OIC foreign ministry level summit in Dhaka.
“As the vehicles are being purchased to use in government protocol, it is logical that the purchase be made under duty-free facilities.”
After the 45th OIC summit, these cars will be stored and maintained for use of VVIP guests attending international summits in Dhaka in the future. Five of these vehicles will handed over to the Foreign Ministry and the rest will be kept in the government transport pool.
The 45th OIC summit, which will be attended by foreign ministers of its member nations, will be held in Dhaka on May 5 to May 6, next year.
