Bangladesh must not forget for a moment that it is a nation of victors and a nation of heroes, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said.
Addressing an event on Saturday at the Suhrawardy Udyan on the occasion of Victory Day, Hasina called on the young generation to model itself in light of the spirit and the sacrifices of the Liberation War, Bangla Tribune reported.
“We cannot forget for a moment that we are a nation of victors, a nation of heroes. We do not bow down to anyone,” she said.
The prime minister spent the day with various observances on the occasion.
President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid tributes to the martyrs of the Liberation War by placing wreaths at the National Memorial in Savar,
The duo placed the wreaths at the altar of the National Memorial at 6:34am, and observed a moment of silence.
Later in the morning Hasina paid tribute to Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi. She stood in solemn silence there for some time to respect the memory of the architect of the country’s independence.
Flanked by senior leaders, Sheikh Hasina, the president of Bangladesh Awami League, placed another wreath at the portrait of her father as the party chief.
Hasina released a memorial postal stamp of Tk10 denomination issued by Bangladesh Postal Department marking the Victory Day, reports BSS.
She also released a data card of Tk5 and a souvenir issued by the postal department on the occasion at her official residence Gonobhaban.
The prime minister greeted freedom fighters, sending flowers, fruits and sweetmeats to the war-wounded freedom fighters at Martyred and War-wounded Freedom Fighters’ Rehabilitation Centre (Muktijoddha Tower-1) at Gaznavi Road of Mohammadpur in the city, reports UNB.
Her Assistant Private Secretary Saifuzzaman Shikhar and Assistant Press Secretary Emrul Kayas handed over these items to the freedom fighters in the afternoon.
The freedom fighters thanked the prime minister for remembering them on every occasion.
They also expressed their gratitude to Sheikh Hasina for undertaking massive steps, including construction of Muktijoddha Tower-1 and a 13-storey residential and commercial building, at Mohammadpur for their rehabilitation.
The freedom fighters and their family members wished the prime minister good health and a long life.
There are residential flats and shops in the Muktijoddha Tower-1 for 80 families of the war-wounded freedom fighters.
A contingent drawn from Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force presented state salute on the occasion.
Cabinet members, prime minister’s advisers, parliament members, chiefs of the three services, diplomats, and high civil and military officials were present .
