The Hefazat-e-Islam has submitted a memorandum to the US embassy in Dhaka protesting against Washington’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
A Hefazat delegation, led by its Dhaka metropolitan unit chief Nur Hossain Kashemi, submitted the memorandum on Wednesday afternoon.
Other members of the delegation were Mahfuzul Haq, Ahmed Abdul Kader, Azizul Haque Islamabadi and Fazlul Karim Kashemi.
Earlier in the day, activists of the radical Islamist group gathered in front of national mosque Baitul Mukarram.
They took out a procession from there and headed towards the US embassy around noon but police intercepted them at Shantinagar around 12:30pm.
Hefazat, on December 8, announced its decision to lay siege to the embassy, two days after President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.
Trump’s decision has overturned decades of US policy and risks triggering fresh wave of violence in the Middle East.
