Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya has said the Rohingya children who are born in Bangladesh will be recognised as Myanmar citizen.
He made the statement while talking to the journalists Monday afternoon.
He said: “On humanitarian ground, the Bangladesh government has given temporarily shelter to the Rohingya fleeing Myanmar.
“In the birth certificates, the government has recognised the newborn Rohingya babies as Myanmar citizens. The mother and child are both Myanmar citizens and they need to go back to their country.”
When asked if Rohingya will be given refugee status, he said: “Time will answer that.”
“They are intruders” he also said while talking about the current status of the Rohingya entering Bangladesh.
Maya said the UNHCR has expressed their will to work on sectors like heath, sewerage system and drinking water.
Maya said: “World Food Programme will continue to provide food in the Rohingya camps and UNHCR will provide Tk35 crore for the construction of roads in the camps which have been built over 2,000 acre of land.”
“They will give us the money in a day or two and the army will help us in the construction of the roads.”
He also said the number of Rohingya entering Bangladesh has crossed 450,000.
Earlier in the day, the minister met Filippo Grandi UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi.
