Detective Branch (DB) of Police is going to take legal action against columnist Farhad Mazhar for allegedly staging his own abduction.
The decision has been taken as the detectives did not find any evidence of the authenticity of the abduction during investigation, the investigators said.
Police will submit the investigation report to the court next week.
DB Deputy Commissioner Sazzadur Rahman, who is investigating the case filed over Farhad’s abduction, said: “No evidence proving the authenticity of Farhad Mazhar’s abduction allegation has been found. Legal action is being taken against him for misleading police by providing false information.”
On the morning of July 3, Farhad went out for an early walk and then phoned his wife, telling her that he had been kidnapped and that the abductors were demanding Tk35 lakh as ransom.

Later at night, he was rescued from Abhaynagar upazila in Jessore and brought to Dhaka.
The following day, Farhad testified in front of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court Judge Ahsan Habib.
Sources said the investigation found that Farhad had staged the abduction drama in order to give money to his friend Archana, who had mobile phone conversations with the pro-BNP columnist on the day of his alleged abduction.
After investigating Farhad’s activities in Khulna on the day of his alleged abduction when he had sent money to Archana through mobile banking, ate dinner at a restaurant and bought ticket to return Dhaka, investigators found evidence that the columnist provided false information and faked his abduction.
An officer of the investigation team, requesting anonymity, said: “It has been found that Farhad’s wife Farida Akhtar filed the abduction case with Adabor police station with the false information given by her husband. For this reason, police will submit a report accusing Farhad instead of his wife for misleading the law enforcers.”

He said legal steps would be taken against Farhad Mazhar under Section 211 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) for filing a false case or under Section 191/193 for giving a false statement before the court.
Police will file a case against Farhad if the court accepts the plea to take action against him, the official added.
According to Section 211 of CrPC, if anyone files a false case, he/she will face a maximum of two years imprisonment, a fine or both.
According to Section 191 and 193, the punishment for giving a false statement is a maximum of seven years of imprisonment or fine.
