A number of passengers have been missing after a trawler carrying 60 people capsized in the Buriganga River in Dhaka.
The Kamrangirchar-bound trawler sank at Sadarghat's Ispahani Guard area around 1am on Tuesday, Hasnabad river police outpost Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Shahidul Islam said.
“It was carrying 60 passengers at the time of the accident," he said.
The trawler's engine shut down after the rotor was tangled in water hyacinth, the SI said. At that time another vessel, shipping goods, rammed into it from behind.
Some of those on board the trawler managed to swim to shore but the number of missing passengers remains unclear.
Hasnabad river police outpost Sub-Inspector (SI) Abul Hossain told the Dhaka Tribune: "The trawler was recovered around 10:30am. We are still not sure about the number of missing passengers."
Fire Service headquarters Operator Ziaur Rahman told the Dhaka Tribune that no causality had been reported since 1pm on Tuesday.
An eyewitness, who identified himself as Hasan, told the Dhaka Tribune that the locals had rescued at least 35 people soon after the trawler capsized.
Fire Service Sadarghat Terminal Deputy Director Joynal Abedin said firefighters, river police and coastguards were searching for the missing passengers.
