Ustad Mihir Kumar Nandi, renowned singer of Swadhin Bangla Betar Kendra, died at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Saturday night at the age of 72.
He had been suffering from cancer and was on life support at the hospital for 23 days, said his son-in-law Ashoke Chowdhury, head of news at Boishakhi TV.
He left behind his wife, a daughter and a number of will-wishers and students.
Born in 1945 in Chittagong's Satkania upazila, Mihir was an artiste of special class at Bangladesh Betar and Bangladesh Television, said his family members.
He founded the music organisation Ananda Dhwani and served as the vice-president of Udichi Shilpi Goshthi and Rabindra Sangeet Sommilon Parishad. For his contribution to the country's cultural heritage, he was awarded Shilpakala Padak in 2015.
He was also a part-time teacher at the department of music of Chittagong University.
Mihir's body was taken to Chittagong Shaheed Minar on Sunday morning where his students and admirers paid their last respects.
Representatives from Chittagong City Corporation, Chittagong district administration, Bangladesh Muktijoddha Sangsad, and Chittagong University paid floral wreaths to pay their rich tribute.
Leaders of Chittagong Journalist Union, Chittagong Press Club and several other socio-cultural organisations came to the Shaheed Minar to pay their respects as well.
Mihir was cremated at Bolua Dighir Par.
