Captain Sayed Mahbub Helal, a pilot of Biman Bangladesh Airlines, has been honoured with the “President's Citation.”
This award is regarded as an equivalent to a lifetime achievement award for an airline pilot, Biman Bangladesh Airlines said in a press release on Sunday.
The award was presented to Captain Helal in Montreal, Canada, by International Federation of Airline Pilots' Association (IFALPA) at a gala dinner on Saturday at Hotel Bonaventure Montréal.
IFALPA presented the award on the sidelines of the 72nd annual conference of the World Pilots' Forum, which was attended by 550 delegates.
For the first time in aviation history, an Asian pilot has been selected for this award, marking a proud moment for Bangladesh and its national flag carrier Biman Bangladesh Airlines.
Every five years, the Technical Jury Board of IFALPA selects one pilot for this award from the global airline pilot community.
This award was given to Captain Helal for his outstanding contribution toward the improvement of airline pilots.
Capt Helal retired in 2014 from Biman as Commander of the DC-10 aircraft. Currently, he is involved in various philanthropic and social outreach programmes.
The conference was attended by officials of the Montreal-based International Civil Aviation Organisation, US-based Federal Aviation Administration, and other industrial partners and stakeholders of the aviation world.
