The High Court on Monday stayed the suspension of Sylhet city Mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury.
Responding to a writ petition filed by Ariful, the HC bench of Justice Syed Muhammad Dastagir Husain and Justice Md. Ataur Rahman Khan passed the order along with a rule questioning legality of the order.
“Earlier in the day Ariful filed the petition challenging the legality of the government order of suspending him,” said his lawyer Abdul Halim Kafi.
Meanwhile, Rajshahi Mayor Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul’s lawyer Aminul Haque Helal said they would also file a writ petition praying for remedy soon.
“We have prepared the petition,” said lawyer Aminul.
The mayors of Rajshahi and Sylhet City Corporations were suspended Sunday morning within hours of assuming office.
Both mayors had been suspended earlier because of their imprisonment in several cases.
Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul and Ariful Haque Chowdhury, the mayors of Rajshahi and Sylhet City Corporations respectively, were elected in 2013 with BNP endorsement.
They won a legal battle in January when the High Court ruled in their favour and reinstated their mayoralty and later the HC also called the decision to suspend them as illegal office holders.
However, the Local Government Division issued several circulars Sunday morning to remove them from office.
