Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina called upon the authorities of general educational institutions to shun mentality and encourage disabled children to enrol at their institutions, saying that their disability could not stand in the way of education.
She made the remark while addressing the inaugural function of the 10th World Autism Awareness Day at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium Sunday morning, reports BSS.
"We always give the highest priority to education. But that must be uniform ... general educational institutions do not want to admit children with disabilities. This mentality has to change," she said.
The Ministry of Social Welfare orgasnised the programme. The day is being observed throughout the country as elsewhere around the globe with the theme - "Toward Autonomy and Self-Determination".
Health Minister Mohammad Nasim and chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Social Welfare Ministry Dr Mozammel Hossain were present at the function as special guests, with State Minister for Social Welfare Nuruzzaman Ahmed presiding over the programme.
