The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) will shut down Facebook if the government orders them to do so, BTRC Chairman Dr Shahjahan Mahmood said on Tuesday.
Sources at the Ministry of Home Affairs have said the government is prepared to block the social networking site for a few hours every night to help curb terrorism and militant activities.
"If the government gives us this order, we will follow it without delay," Shahjahan told reporters at the Westin Hotel in Dhaka on Tuesday.
"The BTRC has not received any such order yet," he added.
The BTRC chairman was speaking at the launch ceremony for Bangladesh's first bamboo telecommunication tower.
He said the commission would submit a report on mobile tower radiation emission by April 10 following a High Court order.
