A worker has been killed and two more injured after a girder of an under-construction flyover fell on them in Malibagh rail gate area.
The deceased is Swapan, 42-year-old son of Azimuddin from Kishoreganj’s Pakundia. The injured are engineer Polash and driver Nurunnabi.
“Two girders were being lifted around 2:30am Monday. Suddenly, one of the girders fell down after hitting the other one, leaving three people trapped under it,” fire service control room officer Belal Uddin told the Dhaka Tribune in the morning.
“Fire fighters rescued the three men and rushed them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where the worker died around 3am,” DMCH police outpost Sub-Inspector Bachchu Miah said.
Usually, a small area is cordoned off when moving girders to avoid any chance of casualties. It was unclear how a pedestrian was at the site when the girder was being moved.
Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor Sayeed Khokon said the Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) has formed a three-member committee to look into the accident, including allegations that the low-quality construction materials and lack of public safety were factors.
“The LGED chief engineer has told me that they take every possible step to ensure safety. No one will be spared if they are found guilty of negligence. The investigators have been asked to submit their findings as soon as possible,” he said.
The mayor said he went to the spot on behalf of LGED Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain, who was in a cabinet meeting, but did not find any representative of the construction company at the site.
"The government will pay damages to the deceased worker's family and arrange treatment for the two injured," the DSCC mayor added.
