One more detained in journo Shimul murder case

Police have detained another person in connection with the murder of Daily Samakal Shahjadpur upazila correspondent Abdul Hakim Shimul in Sirajganj. The detainee is Tofan, 24, son of Abdul Motaleb Mondol of Shahjadpur’s Dargapara. “He was picked up from Chuniakhalipara of the upazila early Saturday after he was identified from the video footage of the clash when Shimul was shot,” Shahjadpur police Inspector (investigation) Monir Hossain told the Dhaka Tribune Saturday morning.

Police earlier arrested prime accused Shahjadpur municipality Mayor Halimul Haque Miru’s personal assistant Dulal Hossain, a charge sheeted accused in the murder case, from Pabna early Friday. So far, 13 people have been arrested in the case while six more charge sheeted accused are still at large. Shimul was shot during the clash between the supporters of Shahjadpur Government College unit Chhatra League President Bijoy Mahmud Mamun and Miru’s brother Pintu over a previous enmity on February 2.

Shimul succumbed to his injuries on the following day while being taken to Dhaka. Mayor Miru claimed that the bullets were fired from both sides. But police in a primary investigation have found that the bullets were fired only from the mayor’s shotgun. Shimul’s wife Nurun Nahar filed a case against 18 individuals, including mayor Miru, his two brothers Pintu and Mintu, and three unidentified suspects. Local Awami League leader Bijoy Mahmud filed another case against 25 people including Miru and his two brothers.
