Extremist killed in Khulna ‘gunfight’
A suspected leader of an extremist group has been killed in an alleged gunfight at Khulna’s Koiya when police raided the area to foil a "robbery bid." Police claim Zia Sana alias Haatkata Zia alias Bomber Zia, 45, was the second-in-command of banned outfit North Bengal Communist Party's Mrinal faction. Zia, hailing from Dumuria, was accused in nine cases, including six for murder. He was one of the most wanted extremists in the district, Harintana police OC Mizanur Rahman said. Mizanur said they were tipped off in the early hours of Friday that some extremists had been preparing for a robbery. A police team, immediately dispatched to foil the robbery bid, came under fire in South Bangla Housing area, he said. The ensuing gunbattle lasted about 15 minutes. The extremists fled the scene leaving behind the bullet-hit Zia Sana. Four policemen were also injured in the skirmish, the OC claimed. All five injured were rushed to the Khulna Medical College Hospital where doctors pronounced Zia dead, OC Mizanur said. Two firearms, bullets, two machetes and 50 pieces of contraband yaba tablets were recovered from the spot.
