Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has allegedly assaulted Sanwar Hossain, a ruling party lawmaker from Tangail 5 constituency.
According to local Awami League leaders present there who wished to remain anonymous, the incident took place at Jamuna Resort in Tangail around 10pm on Saturday when Obaidul stopped there while returning to Dhaka after attending a programme in Rajshahi.
Hasan Imam Khan Sohel Hazari, the newly-elected MP of Tangail 4 constituency, had invited Obaidul, also the Road Transport and Bridges minister, to the resort. But he was not present when the party’s second man reached there. Several other lawmakers and Tangail district unit Awami League leaders were present.
The minister was first irked with the party supporters as they continued chanting slogans. Then he inquired about Sohel Hazari, and got angry as he heard that the MP had gone to Gopalganj the same day.
When lawmaker Sanwar Hossain tried to defend Sohel Hazari, the minister became more furious.
“He is a tout, you are another tout advocating for a tout,” Obaidul yelled at Sanwar, swooped on him and slapped him at least three times before leaving the premises, according to district unit leaders present there, who requested anonymity.
District Awami League President Fazlur Rahman Khan Faruk, General Secretary Joyaherul Islam, Basail-Sakhipur constituency lawmaker Anupom Shahjahan Joy and other upazila-level leaders were also present.
The minister and lawmaker Sanwar could not be reached over the phone for comments on the matter.
